Professional Experience
Step By Step Inc.- Intern
Pinebrook Family Answers- Visitation Monitor
Access Services Inc.- Therapeutic Staff Specialist
I am currently a student at a CACREP accredited Marriage and Family Therapy Master’s program at Capella University. In addition to my studies, I have previous and current work experience in the mental heath field. My current position is a therapeutic staff specialist at Access Services, Inc. I provide in-home mental health services to children on the spectrum.
I identify myself as a Solution-Focused Brief Therapist which coincides with Satir Therapy. A woman I admire a great deal is Virgina Satir who is widely regarded as the “Mother of Family Therapy.” A key concept of her approach is that “presenting problems” or “surface problems” itself was not the real problem but rather how people coped with the issues which created the problem (Tam & C, 2006).
Some therapists unintentionally teach clients a "learned state of generalized helplessness" that can develop into self-fulfilling prophecies of powerlessness. Being a strength based model of therapy, I strongly believe that SFBT is the best chosen theoretical model for me. I also believe that individuals are full of resources, skills, and tools and are resilient beings who are essentially the expert of their lives. The role in which I plan to play as a therapist is to instill hope and empower my future clients to see their own potential and strengths as well as their ability to change their life in a more positive direction.
I believe the greatest gift I can conceive of having from anyone is to be seen by them, heard by them, to be understood and touched by them.
-Virgina Satir
Life is not what it's supposed to be. It's what it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.
-Virgina Satir
We must not allow other people's limited perceptions to define you.
