About Me
My name is Shae McDonald. I am a twenty-five year old, highly motivated, but light-hearted, yoga-loving, recently-engaged, cat lady :) I graduated from Georgia State University in December 2013 with a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology and minored in Sociology. I have always found human behavior fascinating and eventually developed a passion for listening to individual stories of struggle and achievement. My undergraduate program focused primarily on psychological and sociological research, which at first disheartened me, for my career goal was to be a counselor. I came to understand the value of research after graduating, when I worked as a Clinical Research Coordinator, where I was delegated to conduct psychiatric pharmaceutical trials under the supervision of a Psychiatric Medical Director. This was one of the most challenging positions I have ever held, but one of the most rewarding. I gained a wealth of knowledge of the research industry and the ethical dilemmas of conducting pharmaceutical trails.
Now that I have gained experience in the research realm, I am now working as a Community Relations Specialist for Georgia H.O.P.E., a community-based provider of mental health and substance abuse counseling services, covering twenty-one counties in Northwest Georgia. I frequently work with the Department of Family and Children Services, the Department of Juvenile Justice, and court and school systems in the twenty-one counties my team covers. This coverage area consists primarily in the Northeastern rural, Appalachian counties of Georgia. This particular area provides various barriers to wellness including poverty, lack of community resources, lack of transportation, lack of medical providers, high levels of substance abuse, and the list goes on…
My goal is to become a successful Marriage and Family Therapist who works in community settings to help families and couples navigate life’s difficulties. No matter the issues surrounding the unit, communication, understanding and mutual support can alleviate the stressors in relationships.
